As soon as Molly left, Gil hurried to his private office and phoned Detective Flaherty. He reached him on his cell phone. He could hear traffic noises in the background.

"Brian, I got it figured out," he started. "I know how he did it..."

"Sorry, doc. I can't talk right now. I'm on my way to the college. To the ag department. Looks like another terrorist attack. This time with anthrax!"

The Harbor College agriculture department was at the opposite end of campus from bio, on the far eastern side of the school. It consisted of three buildings with labs, classrooms, conference rooms and offices for faculty and staff. Behind the buildings, facing the foothills, were the greenhouses and growing fields where students and teachers put their classroom ideas into the ground to see if they would grow.

Most department research was federally funded, and it aimed to solve problems related to agribusiness. High-priority projects included developing hybrid strains of fungal-resistant rice and improved corn varieties that yielded more protein per kernel. Genetic research also went on there, and many bio department faculty were recruited for these projects. But not J. Franklin Kargyle. He was excluded from them all. No one wanted him.
